High efficiency cooling solution for supermarkets in all climate zones
With the EU’s F-Gas Regulation’s HFC phase-down and global warming potential (GWP) limit of 2500 as of 2020 in new stationary refrigeration systems, high GWP refrigerants such as the HFC R-404A have come increasingly under pressure. In addition, in several European countries, HFC refrigeration systems are subject to high taxes, which are often based on the GWP of the refrigerant. One of the main areas of application of such high GWP refrigerants are supermarkets. For that reason, there is a high penetration of CO2 as a refrigerant in this particular market segment. However, to be attractive in all climate zones, the CO2 technology needs to overcome the challenges of the “CO2 efficiency equator line”, meaning that energy efficiency must also be ensured in countries where the average temperature exceeds 15°C.
